Stuart A. Rice '49

Stuart A. Rice is the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, where he has taught for 60 years.
Rice has performed theoretical and experimental research in several diverse areas of physical chemistry and has published or co-published over 700 scholarly articles and four books. His specific research interests include the active control of quantum dynamic processes and properties of confined liquids and interfaces.

Rice was a member of the National Science Board for six years and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, he was the recipient of the National Medal of Science in Chemistry.

Rice received his Master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard in 1955 after graduating from Brooklyn College in 1952. He graduated from Bronx Science in 1949.
