Joseph Lelyveld '54

Joseph Lelyveld is a journalist and author who spent four decades at the New York Times, serving first as a copy boy, then as a reporter, and eventually as Executive Editor from 1994-2001.

As a reporter for the Times, Lelyveld was stationed as a correspondent everywhere from Washington to Johannesburg to Hong Kong.

Lelyveld has written four books, including his most recent about FDR, His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt. His first book, Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White, won Lelyveld the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.

Prior to his career with the Times, Lelyveld was a Fulbright Scholar in India and Burma and attended the Columbia School of Journalism. He graduated from Harvard College in 1958 after graduating from Bronx Science in 1954.
