Roy Glauber is an American theoretical physicist with a focus on quantum optics. He created a model for photodetection that explained the fundamental characteristics of different types of light such as laserlight and light from light bulbs. After his sophomore year at Harvard, he was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project. He was one of the youngest scientists on the team and his work was focused on calculating the critical mass for the atom bomb. He then returned to Harvard to complete his bachelor’s degree as well as his Ph.D. Glauber joined the faculty at Harvard and his research in quantum optics, focused on the interactions of light and matter. He also does work on high-energy collision theory exploring the statistical correlation of particles produced in high-energy reactions. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2005 for physics.
