Bronx Science Summer Institutes

Together with the Bronx Science Alumni Foundation, Bronx Science is pleased to offer four summer institutes to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors unless otherwise stated. All programs begin on July 1, 2019 and conclude on August 2, 2019. Click the headline for more information and to apply.

Students are expected to attend the entire program every day for the entire time. If you have any questions, please email alumnifoundation@bxscience.eduRegistration is open for all programs and the deadline is May 1, 2019. For more on the specific programs and how to apply, please read below.

Students must be logged into their Bronx Science email account in order to access the applications.


Bronx Science Programming Academy

The Bronx Science Summer Programming Academy is a fun, intensive learning program in which students will learn to code together through online tutorials, projects, and peer collaboration. Through our partnership with Coursera, students of all experience levels will complete a multi-level computer science course based on the introductory Fundamentals of Coding course at Rice University (a Python-based course), as well as gaining industry experience through guest speakers and company site visits. 

Program Days and Times: Mondays – Thursdays; 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Bronx Science Research Institute: Cell and Molecular Studies

Bronx Science Research Institute: Animal Behavior

Open to Rising Sophomores only, an opportunity to engage in authentic research experiences, get a head start on the Research program, or do research without a long-term commitment.  Do actual research this summer on one of two model systems. Cell and Molecular Studies: use Kombucha and other microbes as model systems to answer questions pertaining to ecological systems, acid-base chemistry, catalysis, fermentation and almost any research question you can ask. Animal Behavior: use crickets to investigate communication, social behavior, personality (yes, crickets have personality!), or almost any other animal behavior question you can ask. You can rank your program preference in the application. 

Program Days and Times: Mondays – Fridays; 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Bronx Science Design Institute

The Bronx Science Design Institute (BSDI):  In its fifth year, BSDI offers students an opportunity to work together to design and build your own invention.  You will receive funding for supplies, use of 3D printers and other tools, and weekly feedback from industry leaders. 

Program Days and Times: Mondays – Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Bronx Science Climate Leadership Institute

This program is for students interested in learning more about climate change, and developing their capacity to make a difference. Students will work alongside school-based mentors to explore the challenges and opportunities of acting on climate change. They will also have the chance to partner with inspirational science and policy leaders in the field, with dynamic guest speakers and site visits. This program is ideal for students who have a desire to examine the interplay between science and society, and to increase climate literacy and resilience within our communities.

Program Days and Times: Mondays – Thursdays; 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
