Click the headline for details about the team's regular season finale. On a cold, rainy night in the Bronx, the girls laced up for their regular season finale at the Wolverine cage against the top team in the Bronx, Mott Haven. The Mavericks came in undefeated in division play boasting an 18-0 record and 20-1 overall. Their only lost was a 9 point defeat to the defending back-to-back PSAL champs, James Madison. But the single digit difference during the first meeting of the year had the upset-minded Wolverines believing they could split the season series and ruin the Mavericks undefeated divisional record.
The girls’ tenacious defense was on full display from the jump helping the Wolverines jump out to an early 6-2 lead in the first frame. But a couple of defensive breakdowns resulted in starting center, Lucy Del Deo picking up two personal fouls in the first period. Knowing that we had to go small due to the foul trouble, senior stalwart, Tiffany Okpuzor (4pts, 16rebs) stepped up in a big way and controlled the paint defensively. The ever-improving communication of the Wolverine defense kept the Mavericks to a season-low 4 points in the first quarter and a season-low 14 point first half. Behind the early scoring of Carolina Lopez (19pts, 5rebs, 6asts), the Wolverines ended the first half up 24-14, a score almost no one saw coming. But these were the Mavericks, division winners 5 of the last 6 years, so a run was inevitable.
The Wolverines came out flat in the third period and allowed the Mavericks to close the gap to within two points by the end of the third period. Senior guard, Chelsea Dixon, and senior forward Leslie Reyes combined for 10 points in the third frame, hitting some big shots to bring the Mavericks right back into the game.
The Mavericks continued that momentum into the fourth quarter and would take the lead early in the fourth period as the Wolverines continued to struggle from the field. By the 3:00 mark in the final frame, the Mavericks hit two huge 3s to stretch the lead to 38-33. This score would hold up until the final minutes when senior guard, Christina Satina (8pts, 4rebs) hits a clutch shot driving through the heart of the Maverick defense to make it a one score game. A late turnover by Carolina Lopez led to a fastbreak and what everyone knew was also going to be a foul at the hoop and possible three point play to tie the game. But a missed lay-up meant two free-throws. Lopez calmly sank the first one. She then misses the second one but gets the rebound on a back tap by Lucy Del Deo (7pts, 6rebs) and sinks the free throw pull up to tie the game up at 38-38.
The Wolverines held their ground on the final defensive possession to force overtime, a fitting ending to a game between two of the top teams in the city. In overtime, the Wolverines took the first lead but Mott Haven always had a response and took a one point lead late until a late 3 bomb by Sarang West (7pts, 3rebs, 3asts) gave the Wolverines the lead back by two. A late missed free throw by the Mavericks gave the ball back to the Wolverines in their front court, but a costly turnover gave the Mavericks one final chance. However, they were never able to get the shot off as time expired sending the Bronx Science faithful into a state of frenzy. The wolverines finished 16-2 on the year in the competitive Bronx division and 21-4 overall. They now wait the playoff committee’s seeding decisions and go into the playoffs riding an impressive 18-game winning streak.
